Your Complete Guide to Getting Married at Huguenot Mill & Loft in Greenville, SC

If you've been dreaming of a wedding that blends Greenville's historic character with an effortlessly chic, downtown feel, Huguenot Mill is probably already on your venue shortlist. And honestly? It should be at the top.

I've had the privilege of photographing multiple weddings at the Mill, and every single time I walk in, I'm struck by how genuinely beautiful and photograph-ready this space is.

This guide is written from the perspective of someone who's spent a lot of time behind the lens at Huguenot Mill. My goal is to help you walk into your venue tour — and eventually your wedding day — feeling completely prepared and confident.

A little history (and why it matters for your photos)

Huguenot Mill was built in 1882, making it one of Greenville's oldest standing structures. It's been beautifully restored into a six-acre complex that sits right along the Reedy River in the heart of downtown. That history shows up in every corner of the space in the form of original hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, rough-hewn timber beams, and aged architectural hardware that simply cannot be replicated in a newer venue.

From a photography standpoint, those textures are everything. Brick and wood create warmth and depth in images. They also mean that even the simplest, most minimal wedding décor photographs beautifully because the venue itself brings so much charm and character.

The spaces: what's inside Huguenot Mill

The Mill has two main levels, each offering something different.

On the ground floor, you'll find the Ramsaur Studio — a versatile, intimate space with exposed brick and stylish lounge furniture. It works beautifully as a cocktail hour space, a bridal suite for getting-ready photos, or a breakout area for guests. There's also the Freeman Conference Room with a sliding glass wall, which makes a quiet and private spot for the bridal party to gather before the ceremony.

The star of the show, though, is the Huguenot Loft upstairs. At 8,400 square feet, it's a soaring, open room with original wood plank floors, beam ceilings, and those iconic large windows overlooking the Reedy River. The open floor plan means you can configure it for a ceremony, a reception, or both. It can accommodate up to 400 guests, but it photographs beautifully at more intimate guest counts too — the high ceilings keep the space from ever feeling cramped.

The string lights and the many windows in the loft make for a perfectly dreamy, industrial reception space.

The light (a photographer's honest take)

One of the things I love most about the Huguenot Loft is how generous the natural light is. The original mill windows run along the walls and flood the space with soft, even light throughout the day. For daytime ceremonies and portraits, that light is genuinely stunning — it's the kind of light photographers dream about.

For evening receptions, the venue lighting creates a warm, romantic atmosphere that photographs really well. Just keep in mind that if your ceremony is in the evening or late afternoon in winter months, you'll want to plan for some portrait time earlier in the day while you still have natural light available.

Photographer tip

The windows on the river side of the loft give beautiful directional light for portraits during golden hour. If you have flexibility in your timeline, building in 15–20 minutes near those windows before sunset is so worth it.

Location perks (and what to do with out-of-town guests)

The Mill is located at 101 W Broad St — right in the heart of downtown Greenville, steps from Falls Park and within easy walking distance of some of the best restaurants and bars in the city. After the reception ends, no one has to scramble for transportation — they can simply walk to continue celebrating.

For out-of-town guests, the Courtyard Marriott is just down the street, making it an obvious first recommendation for room blocks. The proximity to downtown dining, the Peace Center, and Falls Park also gives visiting family and friends a full weekend's worth of activities, which makes your wedding feel like a true event rather than just a single evening.

And from a photography standpoint? Falls Park and the Reedy River are right there. If you want to step outside for a few portraits during cocktail hour or between the ceremony and reception, we have options that would make any couple's gallery look like a feature in a magazine.

Practical things to know before you book

The Huguenot Mill is managed through the Peace Center's special events team.

The Loft can host up to 400 guests, though capacity will vary depending on your layout and whether you're doing a ceremony and reception in the same space.

Planning tip

The Loft's team is known for being genuinely helpful — couples consistently rave about working with the events coordinators there. Don't be shy about reaching out early with questions. They're good at responding promptly and helping you visualize the space even before you visit in person.

What to expect from portraits at Huguenot Mill

I've photographed weddings here enough times to have a clear picture of what works best. Inside the Loft, my favorite spots are near the large windows (for that natural light), against the exposed brick walls, and on the original hardwood floors with the beam ceiling above. Every one of those backdrops is timeless — your photos won't look dated in ten years.

Outside the venue, the Reedy River walk and Falls Park offer incredible variety in a very short distance. Depending on the season, you can get lush greenery, golden fall foliage, or a clean, moody winter look. Greenville's downtown backdrop — with its twinkling lights and walkable streets — is also a wonderful option for evening portraits after dark.

Is Huguenot Mill the right fit for you?

Huguenot Mill is a wonderful fit for couples who love that sweet spot between historic character and modern sophistication. It's not a barn venue, and it's not a garden venue — it's urban, warm, and layered with texture. If your style leans toward timeless, editorial, or relaxed-elegant, the Loft is going to feel exactly right.

It's also an ideal choice if having your guests centralized in a walkable, vibrant downtown area matters to you. The experience of a Huguenot Mill wedding extends well beyond the venue itself — it's really a Greenville experience from the moment guests arrive.
